Black Panther’s Lupita learned Filipino Martial arts for fight scenes

In the Hollywood blockbuster Black Panther, Lupita Nyong’o played the role of Nakia, the Wakandan spy.

Aside from the movie’s eye-candy cinematography, critics also raved about the action-pumping fight scenes. Lupita revealed that she had to prepare a lot for the fight scenes.

In an interview with the Collider, Lupita admitted that she had to learn Martial arts, including Filipino Martial arts.

She said, “Nakia’s fighting style is being informed by judo and ju-jitsu and silat, and Filipino martial arts and stuff like that.”

The actress also confirmed it in her interview with the West Australian. She shared that she practiced Filipino martial arts, muay thai, jiujitsu and judo. She also had to learn how to use firearms and Nakia’s signature weapon, the ring blades.

The best supporting actress Oscar winner admitted that she enjoyed the challenges, “So it does take a lot of physical endurance and a commitment to your body, like nothing else. But it’s been so much fun to challenge my body in this new way.”
