- President Duterte promised that he will now stop talking about Lucio Tan and his properties
- Lucio Tan sent a PAL plane to Kuwait to help bring home OFWs
- PAL also paid all its arrears within the deadline Duterte set
President Rodrigo Duterte has finally ended his rift with Lucio Tan.
This came after the business tycoon settled the debts of the flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) within the 10-day deadline. Tan also offered an extra plane to help bring home repatriated OFWs from Kuwait.
The President appreciated the gestures and promised that he will no longer talk about the tax liabilities of Tan’s companies. Duterte was quoted by GMA saying, “Because of this incident, Mr. Lucio Tan, I’m going to shut up forever.”
He added, “Wala ka nang marinig sa akin na salita na hindi ka nagbayad ng [tax]. OK na sa akin, tapos na. Nabayaran mo naman ‘yung taxes mo at ‘yung ipinakita mo. And mind you, I am ready to protect every businessman, kagaya ninyo,” he added.” [You will no longer hear from me that you didn’t pay your taxes. It’s enough for me, the end. You had paid your taxes and what you have shown… And mind you, I’m ready to protect every businessman who’s like you.]
Back in September last year, the President gave a stern warning to Tan and PAL that he will shut down NAIA Terminal 2 if they fail to pay their tax liabilities within 10 days.
