A cargo vessel was attacked by armed men off Sibago Island in Basilan on Friday night, February 16, in an apparent attempt to abduct its crew members for ransom.

As per ABS-CBN, M/V Kudos 1, which was carrying assorted steel bars, was sailing to Manila from Davao City when the pirates on three motorized boats blocked it in a bid to board the ship. The cargo ship’s crewmen, however, were able to repel the attack.

Chris Paul Maligmat, the ship captain, said they repelled the armed men by splashing them with boiling water mixed with oil.

The pirates retaliated by firing at the ship. Two crew members sustained injuries as a result. The pirates fled after Maligmat called the Philippine Navy and Philippine Coast Guard which rushed to the scene to help the cargo ship.

The navy and the coast guard escorted the M\V Kudos 1 to safety in Zamboanga.
