- Macalintal slammed Marcos over ‘false claims’ of proof in election fraud
- The lawyer explained the ‘square markings’ were actually a ‘special features’ in the 2016 election
- For his mistake, Macalintal said Marcos should apologize
MANILA, Philippines – Atty. Romulo Macalintal, the legal counsel of Vice President Leni Robredo, said defeated candidate Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos should be man enough to apologize after claims of ‘proof’ in poll fraud turned out to be a mistake.
Macalintal was referring to the ‘squares’ on the copies of election returns which Marcos questioned; saying the markings were proof that the results were rigged in favor of Robredo.
However, Macalintal explained the ‘square markings’ were actually a ‘special feature’ in the 2016 election which supposedly stood for the ’25-percent threshold’ that signals the vote-counting machine to consider the vote valid and counted.
For this, Macalintal said Marcos appeared to be misinformed and ‘ill-advised’ and may have been absent when the ‘special feature’ was discussed in a briefing for all the political parties during the election.
“Dapat mag-apologize siya. Oo, public apology. Alam mo kung ako, baka lumuhod po ako. ‘Patawarin mo po ako sapagkat ako’y nagkasala,’” said Robredo’s lawyer.
[He should apologize. Yes, a public apology. You know, if I were in his situation, I would have knelt down and say, ‘Please forgive me for I was wrong.]
‘Square markings’ found in all candidates
Macalintal added the former lawmaker seems to have selected only the ballots which showed the ‘square markings’ besides Robredo’s name, when in fact, the markings appeared on the names of “all candidates” including that of Marcos himself.
“Ang problema kay Marcos, namili lang siya para iliko niya ang katotohanan…Kaya hindi totoo sinasabi niya na squares are only for Robredo,” Macalintal said.
[The problem with Marcos is, he only selected some things to veer away from the truth. It’s not true the squares were only for Robredo.]
“Kami’y naniniwala na ‘yong mga pagkakamali nilang ‘yan dapat aminin ang pagkakamali. ‘Yan ang palatandaan ng isang tunay na lalaking maginoo,” the lawyer added.
[We believe he should own to his mistakes. That is the mark of a true gentleman.]
