- The slain gunman in the failed ambush against a lawyer was identified as a dismissed cop
- The slain cop was identified as PO1 Mark Ayeras
- Ayeras was shot by the lawyer’s companion and was run over by the lawyer’s vehicle
The slain gunman in the botched ambush against a lawyer turned to be a police officer who had been dismissed from service for absence without official leave (AWOL).
AS per a story by GMA News, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Guillermo Eleazar said 32-year-old PO1 Mark Ayeras was terminated from police service after he failed to report to his unit – the Regional Public Safety Battalion – at the NCRPO.
“Tinanggal ito sa serbisyo at na-AWOL siya at dahil meron siyang hindi magandang record at hindi naman nakakapagtaka na siya nga ay mabilang sa isang gunman,” Eleazar said.
[He was dismissed from service for being AWOL and because he had bad record. It’s not surprising that he turned out to be a gunman.]
Ayeras was killed after he was shot by a companion of Atty. Argel Joseph Cabatbat, the target of the ambush.
Cabatbat identified his companion as “Jon-Jon” who shot it out with the three attackers. Ayeras was hit once. Cabatbat’s driver then hit the motorcycle of the suspects killing the AWOL cop and injuring another attacker identified as John Paul Napoles. A third suspect managed to escape.
Recovered from Ayeras was his police ID. Napoles, meanwhile, is still recuperating in hospital. He refused to talk to investigators.
