The very first unstaffed ‘car vending machine’ in China was unveiled in South China’s Guangzhou on Monday, March 26. The multi-story facility was launched by China’s e-commerce giant Alibaba and US car maker Ford.

Alibaba and Ford has last year signed a deal to form a partnership to work together on new technological opportunities which includes the building of the cat-themed car vending machine.

The “Test-Drive Center” allows customers to easily test-drive Ford vehicles. Users first have to select the car model they’re interested in then put down a deposit electronically. They also have to schedule a pickup time, and take a selfie so the vending machine can recognize them when they pick up the car for a test drive.

The test drives are free, as long as customers have a very respectable credit score of 700 or higher. The car vending machine building is located in the Baiyun district and covers nearly 1,000 square meters which holds up to 42 vehicles. Some cars included in the vending machine are Ford New Mondeo, Explorer SUV and Mustang.

The car vending machine will be open to the public from March 16 to April 23. Similar machines are being planned in Beijing and Hangzhou.
