At least 200 people were displaced as the Philippine Military launched an offensive against the New People’s Army (NPA) in Aloran, Misamis Occidental.
According to the Misamis Occidental Police Provincial Office (PPO), 54 families or at least 200 people have evacuated to the town’s gymnasium after an armed encounter between the government troops and the NPA at 3:15 p.m. Monday.
Aside from the ground assault by the soldiers, the NPA’s position in Barangay Sinampungan were also bombarded with artillery.
The government side also used a Philippine Air Force chopper.
Checkpoints were set up around Aloran and its outskirts as all police units in the province have been placed on full alert.
Commander of the 1st Tabak Infantry Division, Major General Roseller Murillo said their troops responded to a tip from a resident that NPA members have been extorting money from them.
Gen. Murillo said his men encountered at least 20 rebels in the village.
