- There are speculations that Freddie Roach is no longer Manny Pacquiao’s trainer
- A statement released by Pacquiao’s camp said Buboy Fernandez, Nonoy Neri, and Roger Fernandez will take charge once the training starts
- Freddie Roach said he called Pacquiao five times and haven’t heard back
Manny Pacquiao’s press release about his scheduled fight against Lucas Matthysse in Malaysia fueled speculations that he and his longtime trainer Freddie Roach have parted ways.
According to Philstar, there was no mention of Freddie Roach in Manny Pacquiao camp’s press release about his fight with Matthysse, the World Boxing Association welterweight champion from Argentina. Instead, the press release specifically mentioned that Pacquiao’s childhood friend and assistant trainer for years Restituto “Buboy” Fernandez, Nonoy Neri, and Roger “Haplas” Fernandez will take charge once the training starts.
Pacquiao’s training will be in his own Wild Card Boxing Gym in General Santos City in the middle of April and will transfer to Manila from May 14 to June 1. It will be back to General Santos City from June 2 until the second week of June. The fight with Matthysse is scheduled on June 24 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Another thing that fuelled speculations that Manny and Freddie have parted ways was Roach’s revelation that he tried several times to contact Manny since his fight with Jeff Horn, but to no avail.
“I usually leave him alone until I hear from him, but I’ve called him five times and haven’t heard back. Maybe he changed his number,” Roach said in an interview with the LA Times.
