A Filipino Overseas Worker (OFW) was chosen to star in a feature film showcasing the plights and perseverance of helpers in a foreign land.

Minpa Gervacio will be playing the lead role of Martika, a Filipina helper who is employed by her Chinese employer, Hok Lun. Martika is tasked to take care of his employer’s sick father who is suffering from dementia. The movie will highlight the struggles and dedication of helpers.

Director Wong Fei-pang thinks Gervacio is perfect for the role. She shared with South China Morning Post, “As I was writing the script, I realised it was still lacking something, though I couldn’t pinpoint what it was. You couldn’t really feel the emotions of the character.”

“When we met Minpa, suddenly everything was solved. She made the character a lot more layered,” director Wong added.

Gervacio who is from Palawan has been working in Hong Kong for eight years already. She recalls the struggles she’s been through to achieve her dream.

“I told myself, I am not going to leave Hong Kong without showing you that I have succeeded. So even when I’m having a hard time, I cannot tell [my family back home],” the OFW said.
