- Police raided the house of Angat, Bulacan vice mayor
- The VM has been implicated in the kidnapping of a businesswoman last December 2017
- An arrested member of the group confessed the vice mayor is their leader and financier
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Police Anti-Kidnapping Group (PNP-AKG) has raided the house of Angat town Vice Mayor Gilbert Santos on the strength of the search warrant issued by the court.
The police conducted the search on Santos’ residence on Tuesday morning but the vice mayor was nowhere to be found. He is believed to have gone into hiding after receiving information that a raid will be conducted, a relative said.
Santos was implicated in the kidnapping of businesswoman Raziel Bungay last December 22, 2017.
A ranking police officer, PNP-AKG Luzon Field Unit chief Supt. Arthur Masungsong, and 4 suspects were killed in an entrapment operation while the kidnap victim was successfully rescued a day later.
VM Santos, mastermind?
One of the kidnappers, Donato Jacob, was arrested in Obando, Bualcan last February 24. Donato named VM Santos as the leader, financier and firearms provider of the kidnap for ransom group.
But Santos’ family denied the allegations, saying the vice mayor had been a public servant since 1994. They also believed the allegation against Santos is politically-motivated.
However, Supt. Elmer Cereno, chief of the PNP-AKG Public Information Office, maintained they found evidence to support Jacob’s claim.
Meanwhile, the police found 2 caliber .45 pistols and 2 hand grenades at Santos’ house during the raid.
Cereno said they will file charges of illegal possession of firearms against Santos who is now the subject of a manhunt operation.
