The Russian army has successfully launched an hypersonic missile dubbed as Kinzhal missile that is capable of rendering useless all existing and prospective anti-missile systems, according to Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov.
According to IB Times, the Defense Ministry said in a statement Saturday the hypersonic air-launched missile was launched from a MiG-31 supersonic interceptor jet that took off from an airfield in the South Military District in Russia’s southwest.
“A MiG-31 fighter crew of the Russian Aerospace Forces made a training launch of a hypersonic missile of the Kinzhal high-precision air missile system in the predetermined area,” the ministry said.
“The launch was normal; the hypersonic missile hit the preset target on the test site,” the ministry added.
The Kinzhal is said to travel at 10 times the speed of sound and has a range of 2,000km (1,200 miles).
The missile, is described by President Vladimir Putin – named after a type of a dagger, ‘as an ideal weapon’.
Meanwhile, the US state department said this was not “the behaviour of a responsible international player”.
