- Evasco said he respects the President’s decision
MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte announced on Tuesday he has fired another set of high-ranking government officials, including those he said were “the guys who went back and forth to Davao to convince me to run”.
“I’m very sad to inform you that as of last week I fired another set of high officials,” the President said during his speech at an oath-taking in Malacañang.
“Alam mo, kasi ‘yung iba [You know, because the others] to my chagrin almost… These were the guys who went back and forth to Davao to convince me to run,” he added.
The President’s remarks came just hours after Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque announced that Cabinet Secretary Leoncio “Jun” Evasco will no longer be heading the National Food Authority (NFA) Council, which will be reverted back to the Department of Agriculture (DA).
In his speech, Duterte expressed his ‘lamentations’ over some of his appointees getting involved in anomalies, as well as losing confidence in his friends.
“I don’t want to nurture something that I would be suspicious of anybody in front of me,” said the President. “I know they meant well but along the way, may papasok talaga na kalokohan [there will be wrongdoing]”.
The President admitted these friends were already around early on, as early as his mayorship days, but having them involved in misdeeds now is embarrassing to him.
Meanwhile, Evasco said he respects Duterte’s decision to remove him as chair of NFA Council.
“I have full respect with the decision of the President given the encompassing nature and impact of the National Food Authority on the Filipino People and the farmers,” said Evasco in a statement on Tuesday.
