PNP reminds gun owners of upcoming election gun ban to start on 12:00 a.m. Saturday

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is reminding gun owners not to carry their firearms in public without an exemption from the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) as the gun ban for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections starts on Saturday.

According to Chief Supt. John Bulalacao, spokesperson of PNP, the gun ban as declared by the Comelec for the May 14 election takes effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, which is also the start of the election period.

The gun ban is expected to end on May 21.

Chief Supt. Bulalacao said that anyone who wants to bring their guns in public must first secure a gun ban exemption from the COMELEC.

Anyone who violates will be a******d for illegal possession of firearms and for violating the election rules.

The PNP spokesperson also reminded policemen to strictly observe protocols in conducting checkpoints. They must also wear proper police uniform and  being led by an officer.

In addition, cops on duty at checkpoints are only allowed to conduct a visual search of vehicles through the car windows and should not require passengers to step out.

However, authorities may order a passenger or a driver to get off the vehicle when he or she is an identified subject of an arrest warrant.
