Actress Elizabeth Oropesa, “La Oropesa” to her fans, has expressed her disdain for Interior Secretary Mar Roxas’s alleged lack of compassion for victims of Typhoon “Yolanda” (Haiyan) in her personal Facebook account.
Her December 11 post came in the wake of a video showing the controversial discussion between Roxas and Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez with the former telling the mayor: “Be careful since you are a Romualdez and the President is an Aquino.”
Oropesa started her post, which was written in Filipino, with an apology to pro-Roxas readers, explaining that she had to bring her opinion out.
She went on to say that, “from every angle, his (Roxas) reasoning is wrong.”
“There is no reason not to help and make the victims of the typhoon suffer, no matter who is in power- whether it is your enemy or not,” she said.
Oropesa added: “If you are angry with the Romualdezes, then you should punish the Romualdezes! Legalities are not needed before you extend help to the people.”
The video showed Roxas repeatedly asking for a written legislation from the city government to formally request help from the national government.
“We are all Filipinos! Has Mar Roxas forgotten this? He is just showing off to the President,” she wrote.
She added: “If he has a heart and he is of sound mind, is it not a good example that he will immediately help even if it means helping a member of the opposing party, for the sake of the victims?!!! So what if he is a Romualdez and the President is an Aquino? Isn’t he the President of us all? Did he not say that we are his ‘Boss’. Enough with the excuses. It is already too late.”
At one point, Oropesa directly addressed Roxas with a question: “Where is your heart, sir?”
“I’m sure you have one even if it has been hardened and cooked by ambition. You know, there is no politics in heaven. It also does not matter what your surname is there. What’s important is, if you know how to forgive, be humble and help with all your heart and soul, not because of money or the votes,” she said.
The actress went on to say that even presidents are fallible.
“Marcos was smart and had lots of money. He was not able to take them with him when he died… Cory Aquino, what was the cause of her death? Old age? Is it not cancer? Even if she became the president, even if her husband [Benigno] Aquino became a hero, she did not survive cancer! And then Erap. He is a famous actor and is loved by the masses. Still he failed and was jailed. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is still in jail.”
Oropesa said that all these proved that power, money and surnames are not that important.
She asked Roxas to simply help the victims, adding that playing politics during the time of catastrophes is shameful not just to foreign countries who are trying to help but also to God.
“God does not sleep. You must use your power and the money that you have rightly so that your soul may be saved by your works of charity to those who are needy. I too, have many mistakes, but I would never do the vulgar and shameful act of mistreating other people like you do,” Oropesa concluded.
In another post on December 12, the actress called for the resignation of Roxas.
