Senator Ma. Lourdes “Nancy” Binay expressed the need for stricter gun control as well as a firearm audit in every community, as she finds the numerous reports of gun-related deaths and injuries during the celebration of New Year very alarming.

“Random crimes like r**e and indiscriminate firing create fear and anxiety in every home. It’s distressing to think that you are not safe even inside your own house.”

She wants to push the Philippine National Police (PNP) to speed up the resolution of these incidents, knowing that even children are victims of stray bullets fired indiscriminately, citing the d***h of the three-year-old baby in Ilocos Sur, and another two-year-old child wounded after being hit by a stray bullet in the head in Ilocos Norte.

Binay suggests that a comprehensive profiling of gun owners should be implemented by the PNP.  She also asks the agency to start a community-based investigation to regulate gun holders and identify those who use unlicensed and home-made guns.

“I do hope that the ongoing investigations would yield the possible suspects of the crimes and that they would be made to answer for the crime as soon as possible,” the senator said.

Binay also said that aside from gun-related crimes, she also is alarmed on other crimes and violence committed against children such as r**e.

“It’s so sad to learn so many children have become victims of violence these past few weeks. It’s such a painful and heavy scene to see parents grieving over their children who were frail victims of indiscriminate firing of guns, and young girls raped and k****d. This is a serious issue we ought to resolve,” Binay said.

Along with her father Vice President Jejomar Binay, the senator visited impoverished patients confined at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) on New Year’s Day and they personally saw the difficult situation of a stray bullet victim at the hospital.

“The families of these children are grieving. The children were made human toys in a playground of gun-toting neighbors. Random crimes like r**e and indiscriminate firing create fear and anxiety in every home. It’s distressing to think that you are not safe even inside your own house,” Binay said.
