BARCELONA – The Philippine national basketball team will square off with four other countries in one of the brackets of the 2014 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Cup.
This was known after the tournament’s official draw was held Tuesday morning at Barcelona’s Palau de la Musica Catalana.
Gilas Pilipinas was placed on Group B and is scheduled to face the third-ranked Argentina, fifth-place Greece, Croatia, Americas’ runner-up Puerto Rico and Senegal, in the city of Seville.
Prior to the draw results, Gilas coach Chot Reyes expected the Asian silver medalists to land in the Group C, considering the chance of winning over two European teams in that bracket.
“Sayang! The two teams I felt kaya natin, Ukraine and Finland nasa Group C. Would’ve loved to be in that group,” Reyes said through his Twitter account.
With the placements announced, the 34th world placer Philippines avoided the chance of competing with powerhouses United States and Spain in the preliminaries.
The star-powered defending champions led by LeBron James, were placed on Group C with five other countries, while the host country will be battling the likes of Asian champ Iran and four other teams in Group A.
FIBA Asia’s Bronze winner Korea will clash with Angola, Australia, Mexico and two other Eurobasket teams in Group D.
