Aside from the usual top 10 passers in the 2013 Bar examinations, two law graduates also stole the limelight among the people who passed this year.
One of them is Habeas M. Corpus, his name is one of the most popular legal terms in criminal proceedings. Habeas corpus is a writ (court order) that requires a person under arrest to be brought before a judge or into court.
This writ is usually sought so that a prisoner can be released from unlawful detention—that is, detention that is lacking sufficient cause or evidence. This legal remedy can be sought by the prisoner or by another person coming to the prisoner’s aid. The writ of habeas is considered as an important legal instrument safeguarding individual freedom against arbitrary state action. It was used recently in the ongoing legal case involving alleged fraudulent housing developer Delfin Lee who claimed illegal arrest since according to him, his criminal cases had already been ordered dismissed by the Court of Appeals.
Another 34-year-old named Nat King Coles is making a splash on social media, since he finally passed the bar after three tries. Coles, a law graduate from Eastern Samar State University, was named after legendary singer Nat King Cole.
A law graduate from the University of the Philippines topped the list of this year’s 1,174, who passed the bar exams. Nielson G. Pangan earned a grade of 85.5 percent to take the top spot this year. Supreme Court Associate Justice Arturo Brion said, only 22.18 percent passed this year.
