The police have finally solved the murder of Pinoy racing champion Ferdinand “Enzo” Pastor with the arrest of the businessman mastermind and his hired assassin.
Last June 12, Enzo Pastor, the first Filipino racer to have participated in the NASCAR Whelen Euroseries Open Championship race circuit, was driving a flat-bed truck carrying his race car en route to Clark, Pampanga in preparation for the final leg of the 2014 Asian V8 Championship Series season when he was shot and killed by 2 motorcycle-riding men along Congressional Avenue in Quezon City. The gunmen who wore full-face helmets were not identified.
Last week, the police got a big break on Pastor’s case when Alvin Nidua, leader of a gun-for-hire group, was arrested by the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group. Although not involved in the Pastor murder case, Nidua gave statements to the police about the group behind the car racer’s killing.
The first to fall was Police Officer 2 Edgar Angel, a Pasay cop, who was arrested during a drug buy-bust operation in Quezon City on Saturday. Armed with a solid lead from Nidua, the police were able to get a confession from PO2 Angel that he was paid by a businessman to kill Enzo Pastor.
PO2 Angel identified the businessman who hired him as Domingo “Sandy” de Guzman III, said to be a part-owner of Unique Autowerkes Automobile Designs, a custom car shop in Muntinlupa City. Angel said he was paid P100,000 by De Guzman to liquidate the race champ.
De Guzman was arrested yesterday and is now under police custody in Camp Karingal. Two pistols were recovered from the businessman during the arrest.
Police investigators are eyeing a “love triangle” as a possible motive for the killing. The businessman was allegedly involved or had an affair with Pastor’s wife, Dalia, according to an ABS-CBN report.
Enzo Pastor’s father, Tom, went to Quezon City Police District headquarters in Camp Karingal upon learning of the suspects’ arrest to praise the police.
