DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Mayor Rodrigo Duterte of Davao City asked his supporters for his presidential campaign ads to be removed last Saturday, November 1.
Duterte mentioned that he just ignored them at first because he really did not have any interest whatsoever to run for the presidential elections in 2016. However, he also said that it is now gaining criticisms for non-Davaoenos.
In a report from Sun Star, he was quoted saying, “Ang problema kasi nito it’s starting everywhere at walang maniniwala na hindi akin yan. Maybe yung mga taga-Davao they would believe me. Pero in other places, hindi masyado, lalo na ang ugali ko, my character.” (The problem with this is it’s starting everywhere and nobody would believe that it’s not mine. Maybe people from Davao would believe me, but the people from other places won’t, especially my character).
He also mentioned in the brief press conference that he is planning to retire as Davao City’s mayor in 2016. He said he will retire because of health reasons.
Duterte’s campaign ads can be seen not only in their city but even in other places. It is seen in billboards, shirts, mugs and even in vehicles. There are even pages in the social media promoting him as president for the coming 2016 elections.
When asked about the campaign paraphernalia, he said, “I do not like it. I do not want to be a hypocrite na kunwari gusto, kunwari ayaw.” (I do not want people to have an impression that I seem to like it or I don’t like it.)
When asked about the Facebook pages campaigning for him as the next president, he bluntly said, “I do not have an account sa Facebook because I do not even know how to open a gadget. Nobody has the authority to speak for me.”
Duterte: “Inday is my capable successor”
“It’s not for political dynasty na sinasabi nila, wala kami niyan. (It’s not for political dynasty as what they are saying, we don’t have such) But si Inday can carry on as mayor, ” Duterte said during the press conference, stating that his daughter, Sara “Inday” Zimmerman Duterte-Carpio is the most capable to lead Davao City.
