Senator Tito Sotto wants to re-invent Sharon Cuneta into a politician

Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III said he wants to groom actress-singer Sharon Cuneta into a successful politician.

The senator, who is the husband of Cuneta’s aunt Helen Gamboa, believes Sharon, better known in local show business as the Megastar, would make a good mayor of Pasay City.

The late Pablo Cuneta, the longest-serving mayor in Philippine history (he was Pasay City Mayor from December 30, 1951 to June 30, 1998 and referred to as the grand Old Man of the city’s politics) was Sharon‘s father.

Sotto said if he was able to “invent” the Megastar’s showbiz career, he could re-invent her into a successful politician.

“Kung ako ang tatanungin, sapagkat ako ang naghubog, ako ang nag-imbento ng showbiz career niya, puwede ko ring iimbento ang political career niya kung gusto niya,” Senator Sotto said.

(If you’l ask me, If I was able to invent and shape her showbiz career, I could also invent her political career if she wanted to)

The Senate’s acting majority leader played a big role in launching Sharon Cuneta’s showbiz career. He was the vice president of Vicor Music Corporation when it signed Cuneta to record an album.

Cuneta’s first single “Tawag ng Pag-ibig” received a lukewarm response from the music-listening public. So, Sotto called composer Rey Valera to make a song for the young aspiring singer. Valera composed “Mr. DJ” which became very popular and it kickstarted her career in showbiz.

Sotto clarified he has yet to discuss his plan of grooming the actress into a politician with Sharon. He also admitted that he is not sure whether or not Cuneta, whom he and his wife regard as their own daughter, is interested to have a political career.

Sharon Cuneta is the wife of former Senator Francis Pangilinan, who was appointed by President Benigno Aquino III as the Presidential Assistant for Food Security and Agricultural Modernization.
