Facebook rolling out user-based buy-and-sell feature

Facebook, a giant in the social networking site, levels up on Craigslist territory with its most recent features to cater to buy-and-sell transactions.

As posted on a blog, Facebook said that For Sale Groups allow members to include descriptions, prices, and pick-up/ delivery location of the items that they are selling when they are creating a post through selecting the “sell” button.

Facebook also added that part of its latest features are the “available” and “sold” button for easy access on the availability of the products plus users can also view the catalog of previously sold items.

Admins of the “For Sale Groups” on Facebook can nominate their group to get the new feature on this page.

The newest features will be available across the web, iOS and Android.

Facebook referred to the case of Lisa Thayer, whose “Made by Mama Buy/Sell/Trade” for her crochet work fascinated 4,500 members.

The social networking giant cited how it facilitated lots of women to turn their hobbies into businesses.

One more case it cited was that of Kadu Carvalho, a professional guitarist from Rio de Janeiro, who made a Facebook Group to lend a hand to the musicians in Brazil who buy and sell instruments.

While personally doing the buy, sell, and trade of musical instruments, Swell, Kadu’s band, has also been promoted in nearly three years as the group grows with more than 34,000 members.

Craigslist alternative

On a separate report on tech site Mashable, it was explained that the new feature is a more organized interface for business.

It was mentioned that Facebook users can now select a ‘sell’ button instead of ‘post’ when composing a list, and individual slots can also be filled out to indicate price and product descriptions, instead of the usual single body of text used in Facebook post.

Still, Mashable commented that Facebook’s new feature may not be able to defeat Craigslist; though it makes user-based selling a bit more official on the platform.
