Seen on a CCTV footage was a 3-year-old boy who wandered out of their apartment building in Toronto early morning Thursday as temperature dropped to negative 30 degree Celcius; leading to his death.
Reports say Elijah Marsh walked out of the building of the apartment where he was staying with family wearing only his T-shirt, boots, and diaper. Apparently, his family were still asleep when he wandered into the cold outside. They woke up and found him gone and later saw their front door was open.
Local media said that the hours-long of search involved neighbors, family, friends and police from other divisions.
After spending about six hours outside with the freezing overnight temperature, CBC reported that the volunteers found the toddler in the backyard of a private house which is 300 meters (984 feet) away from the apartment as he lays in the cold with no vital signs of life.
Elijah was brought to the hospital but the poor little boy could no longer be revived.
“You see the picture of that beautiful little boy with a nice smile and the video of the child going out into the cold,” commented Bill Blair, chief of Toronto police.
The story of the young boy touched the city that made many people who shared their grief through the social networking site, Twitter and they even posted an online bid to help the boy’s family cover the cost of the funeral.
Over thirty-three thousand Canadian dollars were raised by the campaign.
Blair continued that it is really a tragic set of circumstances, and that every people of Toronto will feel the loss.
“I think it’ll remind all of us to go home and just hug our kids a little bit more. And I think we all will grieve for that child and for their family and for their community for its loss.”
