MANILA, Philippines—Despite growing up in a poor family and having had to work as a house helper, 2015 Binibining Pilipinas hopeful Janicel Lubina isn’t one bit ashamed.
On the contrary, the 19-year-old is very proud of her humble roots. In fact she is dedicating her beauty tilt campaign to her fans back in her native home of Palawan.
“This is for everyone in Palawan who supported and prayed for me,” she said.
In a press interview, Lubina recounted how she had to work hard to support her family.
“I had to work as house helper during my third year in high school because my father had a mild stroke, so I had to work to support my family. I became a housemaid since my mom also was one,” she said.
Aside from the domestic duties, Lubina said she also worked as a farm hand to earn more money.
“I used to work in the rice fields at the break of dawn. I sifted the newly harvested ‘palay’ to get the rice grains,” she said.
She also shared how up until now, she still couldn’t believe she was actually competing in the country’s premier beauty pageant.
“I still can’t believe I’m here right now. I’m very proud of my humble beginnings,” she said.
When asked if her fellow candidates looked down on her, Lubina answered no. In fact, according to her, the rest of the girls were very much inspired by her story.
Lubina is set to vie for the crown along with 33 other candidates for the Bb. Pilipinas 2015 edition. The coronation night will be held on March 15 at the Araneta Coliseum.
Prior to entering the contest, Lubina had entered and won several beauty tilts, including the 2013 Miss Bikini Philippines and 2012 Mutya ng Palawan.
