MANILA – The motion for reconsideration to disqualify incumbent Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada was junked by the Supreme Court (SC), Tuesday, March 10.
The SC en banc rejected the motion for reconsideration filed by Atty. Alicia Vidal and former Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, who argued that the pardon granted by then-President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to her predecessor was conditioned on his not seeking any political position, a report from Interaksyon stated.
The high court said the pardon was absolute and bore no such condition.
Looking back, Estrada was impeached in January 2001 amid massive protests against alleged corruption while in his seat as president. His vice president, Mrs. Arroyo, replaced him and a special division of the Sandiganbayan tried him for plunder, for which he was convicted. Then-president Arroyo later pardoned him.
The en banc said Vidal’s camp had offered no new argument to cause the court to reconsider its earlier ruling.
“The court denied the motion for reconsideration filed by intervenor, former Mayor Alfredo Lim, on the ground that no substantial argument was raised to merit a reconsideration,” the high court said (quoted from ABS-CBN).
Moreover, the high court voted 11-3 in favor of Estrada.
Estrada: Enjoy your retirement, Lim
Meanwhile, now that the SC has already made a final decision, Estrada has a message to Lim.
“Enjoy your retirement,” Estrada said, as reported by ABS-CBN.
The mayor also stated that Tuesday is his day at the SC, as the high court also upheld an earlier ruling on the relocation of the Pandacan oil depot.
