Japanese law still does not recognize same-sex marriage. However, model Ayaka Ichinose and actress Akane Sugimori married in front of 80 of their closest relatives and friends, hoping that same-sex marriage will be legalized in their country one day.
Sugimori, 28, said they held the wedding ceremony even though it was only symbolic so that other same-sex couples would find it easier to do the same in the future. She also revealed that they would attempt to register their marriage with the municipal office, despite knowing that their application will most likely be denied.
The couple met in a gay bar in Shinjuku in October 2012, according to a statement released by Ichinose's talent agency to announce the wedding, and they began living together last year.
Ichinose, 34, who began her career as a gravure idol, came out of the closet and revealed she was a lesbian in April 2009 through "FLASH" magazine.
She hesitated at first because she was new to the entertainment industry, but she eventually decided to embrace who she was, not just for herself, but also to inspire others to live with pride.
The Shibuya district council in Tokyo voted in February to issue "partnership" certificates to same-sex couples.
The "partnership" certificate will carry only a symbolic significance since based on the Japanese law, a legal marriage is identified as a union based on mutual consent of the parties from "both sexes".

According to Yahoo News, same-s*x partners in Japan attempted to circumvent the country's conservative social arrangements by adopting the other so that they are officially part of the same family and have the same rights as other family members.
