The White House Easter Egg Roll is an annual event held at the lawn of the White House and is celebrated on Easter Monday. This year, the First Family prepared games and surprises for the kids and their parents who attended the event such as the famous Egg Roll race, fitness sessions and even cooking classes.
Tens of thousands attended and participated in the festival. One of the guests include a little girl, Sofia, aged 9, whom President Obama personally invited after receiving a letter from her. In the letter, Sofia asked the President why there weren’t any females on dollar bills. Notably though, Obama’s daughters were absent from the event. The President excused them saying that both were occupied by “a little school stuff going on”.
Another reason to celebrate Easter is to commemorate the First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” campaign which seeks to fight childhood obesity through encouraging children in picking healthier foods and exercising.
To support her campaign, Mrs. Obama showcased her impressive dance moves when she performed Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” with the cast of Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance”. The dance was named #GimmeFive which was based from the First Lady’s request to share the five things they changed for a healthier lifestyle. The #GimmeFive was extended to the attendees of the event.
Mr. President read his favorite childhood book, “Where the Wild Things Are”; an activity he has been doing since 2009. He also actively joined in the fun by participating in the Tennis game against Danish racket star, Caroline Wozniacki. He also played basketball with the Washington Wizards and was even hit in the head after catching a rebound.
The White House collaborated with Snapchat and encouraged the almost 35,000 attendees to post photos so that people could follow along the celebration as well.
