The Philippines’ own R&B prince went retro in his latest performance in Your Face Sounds Familiar.
Jay-R brought the audience back to the 1970s as Vic Sotto singing the song, “Ipagpatawad Mo.”
The OPM hit was originally sung by VST & Co., a musical group that counted Vic, now-Senator Tito Sotto, and Joey de Leon.
While Jay-R has been known for his soulful voice and taking his performance seriously, it appeared that the American-born singer had difficulty rendering a number in Tagalog.
“Sa boses, there’s never a doubt ‘pag kumanta ka, Jay-R, na kahit sino ang gayahin mo, kayang-kaya mo talaga. Ang napansin ko lang, is that medyo hirap ka talaga sa Tagalog. (There’s never a doubt that in terms of voice, no matter who you impersonate, Jay-R, you can really do it. I just noticed that you really have difficulty with Tagalog),” said judge Gary Valenciano to the singer.
Nonetheless, his vocal quality earned praises from the judges.
“To stand out amongst those na maraming galaw and really touch us, and make us believe na parang ikaw si Bossing (To stand out among those with so much actions and really touch us and make us believe you were really Bossing Vic Sotto), I’m so proud of you,” Sharon Cuneta commented.
Jed Madela challenged the Fil-Am singer to say the word “nakakapagpabagabag” (worrisome) before lauding him for doing justice to an iconic song.
“Iilan lang ang makakapull off ng kantang ‘yun (Only a few people could pull off that song), but your performance tonight was really, really good,” he said.
