Three-term Manila Representative Amado Bagatsing threw his hat into the ring as a contender to incumbent Mayor Joseph Ejercito Estrada’s re-election bid in 2016.
Bagatsing made the announcement together with his running mate, current city councilor Ali Atienza who happens to be the son of former Manila Mayor and incumbent Buhay Party-List Representative Lito Atienza.
“I will be facing Goliaths in the 2016 mayoralty polls. We have tried Lim. We have tried Estrada. Enough is enough. I cannot bear the frivolities in Manila, especially the mistreatment of the poor,” he said according to a report by PhilStar.
Bagatsing has represented the Fifth District of Manila since 2007 and is the son of another former Mayor, Ramon Bagatsing.
He said that the lack of medical health care for Manila residents, the rise of local taxes, and the plans of city hall to enter into joint venture projects with private companies to develop public markets prompted him to make his bid to lead the Philippine capital city.
“As of now, I am committed to bring back the glory of Manila. That’s why my plan is to run for reelection to finish my dreams for Manila,” he said.
Vice Mayor hopeful Atienza, echoed Bagatsing’s concerns.
“Sa panahon ngayon, wala nang libre. Ang ospital, may bayad. Basketball court, may bayad. Kahit saan ka pumunta ngayon, may bayad. Tinaas na nga yung buwis. Pati ba naman serbisyo’t benepisyo ay pagbabayarin pa ang taumbyaan? (Nowadays, nothing is free anymore. The hospital, with fees. Basketball court, with fees. Everywhere you go now, with fees. The taxes have been raised. Should the people have to pay for services and benefits?),” Atienza said as reported by GMA News.
For his part, Estrada has not yet found his running mate for 2016 as incumbent Vice Mayor Isko Moreno plans to run for Senate.
