MANILA, Philippines – It’s official. Jason Webb will be Star Hotshots’ new head coach as Tim Cone moves on to Barangay Ginebra to replace Frankie Lim.
After Ramon S. Ang, San Miguel Corporation president and owner of both Star Hotshots and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel confirmed on Monday, July 20, that Tim Cone will be transferring from Star Hotshots to Barangay Ginebra, reports said Jason Webb will replace Cone as Hotshots’ head coach.
However, on Tuesday, July 21, a source told Inquirer that Webb’s appointment is not yet final as Richard del Rosario’s name came up as a last minute candidate to replace Cone.
On Thursday, July 23, all the speculations were laid to rest as both Tim Cone and Jason Webb were appointed as the head coaches of San Miguel Corporation’s PBA teams; Cone for Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and Webb for Star Hotshots.
Richard del Rosario, former assistant coach of Star Hotshots and who also played under Cone with the Alaska Aces in the early 2000s will accompany the league’s winningest coach to Barangay Ginebra. Cone considers del Rosario his strategist.
Hotshots’ new head coach
Speaking in front of selected members of the press, rookie coach Jason Webb expects to be compared to his predecessor and admits the shoes left by Tim Cone would definitely be hard to fill. Nevertheless, he will attempt to make his own mark as Star Hotshot’s new head coach.
Interkasyon reported that Webb compared Cone to NBA’s coaching legend Phil Jackson, whose successors didn’t really have a lot of success and said he hopes to be different than Jackson’s successors.
“One thing that you have to remember is, when coach Tim made this move, there’s already a vacancy and I think this is one way for me to lessen the pressure. Maybe I’m actually getting into a vacancy rather than replacing Coach Tim,” he added.
