Gilas Pilipinas lost their first game in the 2015 Toyota Four Nations Cup against Neatherlands on Thursday, August 20 at Saku Suurhall Arena in Tallinn, Estonia.
The national team fought a good fight and showed good offensive attack but their defense was not strong enough to block the plays of Neatherlands, who used their height advantage to overpower Gilas Pilipinas.
According to Bleacher Report, Roeland Schaftenaar led the way for Neatherlands with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Henk Norel and Charlon Kloof chipped in 12 and 11 points respectively.
Smart Gilas Basketball reported that the scores of Gilas Pilipinas players are as follows:
- Calvin Abueva 11
- Jason Castro 8
- Terrence Romeo
- Andray Blatche 7
- Gary David 6
- Asi Taulava 5
- Jeth-Troy Rosario 5
- Jimmy Alapag 3
- Matt Ganuelas-Rosser 3
- Gabriel Norwood 3
- Aldrech Ramos 2
- Joachim Thoss 0.
Ranidel de Ocampo, who is still recovering from his hamstring injury, but still joined the trip to Estonia after getting a clearance from his attending physician, sat out the game.
According to Coach Tab Baldwin in a previous interview, even though the 6-foot-7 forward joined them, it’s unlikely that he will be playing any games because he’ll continue doing the therapy there with team trainer Dexter Aseron.
With just a few weeks remaining before the national team opens its campaign in the 2015 FIBA Asia Men’s Championship in Changsa, Hunan, China against Palestine, the players must give all they have in order to win and their games in the 2015 Toyota Four Nations Cup are a part of their preparations.
This is also the team’s first game under coach Baldwin, who is hoping to turn the national team into their best fighting form before the 2015 FIBA Asia Men’s Championship next month.
Coach Baldwin believes that this will help the players gradually improve as a team.
“You cannot build a team overnight but I expect our team to improve day by day,” he said.
