300K residents to face water interruption starting next week

The National Water Resources Board (NWRB) has announced that around 355 thousand consumers from the National Capital Region and its neighboring provinces will experience water service interruptions starting next week.

According to a report from CNN Philippines, the expected disruption is the effect of the NWRB’s decision to reduce the allocations given to Maynilad and Manila Water from 41 to 38 cubic meters per second (cms) to preserve Angat Dam’s resources which is way below its normal level of 210 to 212 meters.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) earlier said that the severe El Niño being experienced in the country may persist until June next year, prompting the NWRB to take immediate action.

In a press briefing held on Tuesday morning, the NWRB also revealed that if the current drought will continue to become worse, Metro Manila may experience an allocation of merely 34 to 35 cms on December, and local farmers from Bulacan and Pampanga who rely on water from Angat Dam may temporarily lose supply.

Meanwhile, Senior Deputy Administrator Nathaniel Santos of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) would like to inform the consumers that water subscribers may either experience lowered supply pressure, or shortened service hours since concessionaires will have to adjust from 43 to 46 cms to what is provided to them.

Due to this, Maynilad has announced that a 12-hour service interruption will already be felt next week in Quezon City, Caloocan, Parañaque, Cavite, and Valenzuela, while Manila Water said that the disruption will affect their subscribers in Quezon City, Taguig, Rizal, Marikina, Antipolo, and Pasig.

Both contractors also remind the public that they will provide ample time for subscribers to store enough water for the period since they may not conduct rationing activities in order to preserve the water flowing on their service lines.
