- Movie is now the highest-grossing historical film of all time
- Producer says they will make sequel if ‘Heneral Luna’ breaks even at P200 million
- Sequels to feature the life of Gregorio del Pilar and Manuel Quezon
MANILA, Philippines – The revolution continues.
Defying the decline in profits usually expected of a film with the passage of time, the critically-acclaimed ‘Heneral Luna’ instead embarked on its highest weekly gross since its release three weeks ago.
The epic movie covering the life and d***h of the country’s fiercest general grossed 104 million on its third week from September 23 to 29, propping up its total haul to P163 million since it was first shown last September 9.
By contrast, the movie garnered only P15 million and P44 million during its first and second week run respectively.
The astronomical increase in the movie’s weekly gross can be attributed to the public’s overwhelmingly positive response towards the movie’s plot and ensemble cast.
By breaking the P160 million mark, ‘Heneral Luna’ is now the country’s highest-grossing historical film of all time.
For producer Joji Alonso, hopes are high the movie may just reach the P200 million break-even point to allow them to make another epic film.
“We continue to call on all Filipinos, to help this film reach its break-even point of P200 million, so that the producers may have the resources to start its next film on another national hero,” he told ABS-CBN.
While it has not been officially confirmed yet, it is widely believed the next movie of the epic trilogy would be based on the life of Gregorio del Pilar; the general who lost his life defending Emilio Aquinaldo’s retreat with a delaying action against the Americans in the Battle of Tirad Pass.
The third movie would possibly focus on the life of Commonwealth President Manuel Quezon.
Both del Pilar and Quezon were shown in cameo appearances in ‘Heneral Luna.’
