- Davao City mayor makes confirmation during media interview
- He says their being together is proof of team-up
- Cayetano vows to support running mate all the way
MANILA, Philippines – Looks like Team “Duet” (Duterte-Cayetano) is sealed.
Speaking to reporters during an interview on Monday, tough-talking Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte confirmed Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano would be his running mate in the 2016 elections.
“Yes, that’s why we are appearing together,” Rappler quoted him as saying, after being asked whether he and Cayetano were now a tandem.
For his part, Cayetano—who earlier unilaterally said he was teaming up with the mayor—vowed to support Duterte all the way even if his political opponents and criminal elements try to stop him.
“He has no money, he has no political machinery, but he will change the game,” he said. “There are 5,000 drug lords many of whom have money. Include also the smugglers and other criminals, they would all contribute funds just to prevent Duterte from running because they know their world will change with him as president.”
Despite the opposition, Cayetano said they can source their funds for a credible political run from various grassroots supporters who want to see Duterte become president.
“The good news is even if there is no money, his expenses will be less and less because of his supporters,” Cayetano stressed. “Any of these posters you see on these highways were shouldered by supporters. There are young businessmen with big names and no demands who just want change.”
The senator was also confident Duterte would be able to hurdle any issues pertaining to his substitution as PDP-Laban’s presidential candidate.
“There are no legal issues, we have many lawyers who looked at it,” he pointed out. “Under the law, the substitution is allowed, and the filing of PDP Laban is valid.”
