- Tough-talking mayor hits back at former justice secretary
- He essentially calls her “bugokski” (stupid) for attempting to link him to extrajudicial killings
- He describes her actions as mere dramatics
- Mayor also reproaches De Lima for attempting to curb his colorful language
MANILA, Philippines – The word war continues.
Speaking at a book launching at Century Park Hotel in Manila, presidential candidate Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte minced no words describing his nemesis, former justice secretary and now senatorial candidate Leila de Lima, as stupid for her attempts to rein in his colorful language and link him to extrajudicial killings.
Recalling his past appearance at a Senate hearing where he said he would gladly kill alleged rice smuggler Davidson Bangayan if he does business in Davao City, Duterte said he was reproached at the time by De Lima for his statement.
“She wanted me punished for my statement in the Senate,” Philippine Star quoted him as saying. “I answered back, ‘You are bright, we came from the same school, then why are you bugokski?’”
De Lima, who was then head of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), found the statement disturbing and recommended sanctions for the mayor.
Duterte also recalled another incident wherein De Lima was gathering evidence to incriminate him on the killing of a certain Alfredo Mendoza.
“The drama of that gaga (fool) was ‘Mr. Mayor, you were overheard one day talking about a certain Alfredo Mendoza. What is horrible is two days after that, he was found dead with a gunshot wound in the head. What can you say about that?’”
In response, Duterte pointed out he just shrugged it off.
“I said I don’t know,” he said.
Duterte has not been on good terms with De Lima and retired CHR chair Etta Rosales due to his open advocacy in using heavy-handed measures against criminals.
