KAGMAN, Saipan – An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) died after reportedly falling down from an elevator shaft.

GMA News mentioned in their article published on March 17 that Jose Mertola, 58 years old, died when he fell from an elevator shaft at the Laolao Bay Golf and Resort in Kagman 3 last Sunday night.

The Filipino worker ended up with multiple lacerations to the head, right arm, left ribs, and right inner thigh. Derek Gersonde, the spokesman for the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services (DFEMS), said that Mertola also had an open fracture wound to the left leg.

Gersonde revealed that the Filipino worker was found at the bottom of the elevator shaft. Before the accident, Mertola’s colleagues had seen him working in the area which is 20-30 feet in height.

DFEMS received a call from DPS 911 dispatch about a possible missing person who was reportedly last seen working in the elevator shaft at Laolao Bay Golf and Resort.

An article by Ferdie De La Torre for Saipan Tribune published on March 15 said that DFEMS responders were on their way to the scene when 911 dispatchers notified them that the victim was found at the bottom of the elevator shaft.

Upon arrival, DFEMS personnel checked the victim for pulse and lung sounds; wherein they found out that the worker was no longer breathing and was motionless.

Gersonde said that after DPS crime scene technicians processed the scene, the medics rushed the victim to the Commonwealth Health Center emergency room, where Dr. Florence Schenker pronounced him d**d at 9:06 pm.

Meanwhile, the Department of Public Safety acting spokesman, Jason Tarkong, said yesterday that preliminary investigation showed that the cause of d***h was accidental. Tarkong said the investigation is ongoing and that he has yet to receive a copy of the police reports.
