- Mayor Rodrigo Duterte welcomed VP Binay’s plan to probe his links to the Davao Death Squad
- The DDS is a vigilante group allegedly responsible for summary executions in Davao City
- Duterte said the planned probe would give him a chance to defend himself
Presidential race frontrunner Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said he welcomes Vice President Jejomar Binay’s plan to investigate his links to the dreaded Davao Death Squad (DDS); a vigilante group purportedly responsible for summary executions of individuals suspected of petty crimes and dealings in drugs in Davao City.
The vice president, who is also eyeing the presidency, earlier made a vow to create an independent investigative body to look into the mayor’s alleged links to the vigilante group.
“It’s time for DDS, along with Duterte, to answer to God and the laws of our country,” Binay was quoted saying.
Philstar’s Robertzon Ramirez wrote in his April 16 article that Duterte said he would thank the vice president if he pushes through with the planned probe on the DDS because it would give him a chance to defend himself. He added that Binay is in panic mode as the May 9 election draws closer.
Mayor Duterte, who topped the Social Weather Station’s latest survey on presidential race that was conducted on March 30-April 2, has a seven-point lead advantage over Binay, who landed on third spot.
“My rival (Binay) is down. You know if a person is already losing, then it’s nothing. Tell him that I would thank him for the chance to defend myself,” Duterte said.
Believing in the mayor’s innocence, Duterte’s running mate, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, even volunteered to join Binay in the planned probe.
“I will accompany him because Mayor Duterte has been investigated for the past 20 years and they could not prove that he violated the laws,” Cayetano, a lawyer, said.
