- Poe, Roxas camps are purportedly in talks to forge a tactical alliance against Mayor Duterte
- Poe’s camp allegedly asked the Roxas camp to agree to a concerted effort to expose Duterte as unfit to be president
- Poe’s spokesman denied the alleged tactical alliance
The camps of Senator Grace Poe and former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, two of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s four rivals in the presidential race, are allegedly in talks to forge a tactical alliance to stop the mayor’s surge in poll ratings, an unidentified source said.
Paolo Romero of Philstar wrote in his April 25, 2016 article that according to the unnamed source who is allegedly privy to the talks, Senator Poe’s camp sent feelers to the Roxas camp to agree to a concerted effort to “expose the Davao City mayor as unfit to be president.”
“This is a different fight altogether. We’re doing this for the sake of the country, which we don’t want to go to the dogs if Duterte wins,” the Philstar article quoted the source as saying.
The source reportedly added “nobody is conceding defeat here, it’s just about working together to ensure our future as a nation is protected from impulsive, unpredictable, and dangerous leadership.”
The source further stated that the Poe and Roxas camps mutually agreed to discuss the matter. The people running the campaign of Mar Roxas are purportedly set to meet this week to talk about the proposal.
Senator Grace Poe’s spokesman, Valenzuela City Mayor Rex Gatchalian, denied the alleged tactical alliance; saying that Senator Poe’s focus in the next two weeks would be to amplify what “Gobyernong may Puso” can do for the Filipino public.
“Poe is not out to form alliances with other candidates in order to pull down other candidates. Our strategy to achieve victory is to focus on our own campaign and to highlight our message,” Gatchalian said.
