- He emphasized a smooth transition, said well-performing officials vital to Duterte presidency
MANILA, Philippines – Continue doing a good job and you’ll get to keep it.
With incoming president Rodrigo Duterte weeks away from formally assuming his seat, the Davao City Mayor’s spokesman said not all officials of the current PNoy administration would be removed from their posts.
In an interview with local media, Peter Tiu Lavina pointed out that current officials who have done their jobs well will be allowed to retain their posts under a Duterte presidency.
“Not everyone will be replaced naman. May mare-retain naman diyan [There are those who will be retained], particularly, those who are performing well. Wala namang kaso, ‘di ba [No problem with that, right]? No questions about their ability, their integrity who may embrace the program of Mayor Duterte, then it’s possible that they will be retained and we would welcome that,” GMA News quoted him as saying.
Lavina stressed that these well-performing officials could prove to be a vital cog to Duterte’s drive for good governance given their experience.
“Why? There will be important institutional memories who will know what happened to these institutions, the problems, the people. It is also not good to just replace wholesale, everyone. The newcomers will have plenty of problems knowing the problems, the priorities, the people, ‘di ba [right]? What happened to these agencies? Kaya nga [That’s why] we are telling smooth transition,” he said.
Duterte has already created a transition team to list possible candidates to vital government posts and to create a Cabinet as diverse as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s.
