The Department of Education (DepEd) needs to fill in more than 50,000 vacant teaching positions, particularly for Science and Math.

DepEd Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones said there is still a high demand for teachers for the country’s K to 12 program, despite efforts made by the previous administration to recruit 195,302 teachers between 2010 and 2016.

“We have a challenge in hiring Math and Science teachers … [We need] a huge army of teachers, we’ll recruit more… We lack teachers. We are not displacing teachers,” Briones said, as previously quoted by InterAksyon.

About P15.5 billion from the proposed P567.56 billion budget of the Department in 2017 will be used to hire 53,831 teachers.

The creation of the senior high school (SHS) program created 36,461 teaching items under DepEd. In order to deter the displacement of teachers due to the implementation of K to 12, the Department has already hired 3,950 displaced faculty from higher education institutions, including 928 who availed of the “Green Lane” for immediate employment.

In addition, DepEd is currently offering above-entry level salaries to individuals who graduated from Science and Technology courses under the Junior Level Science Scholarships (JLSS) of the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (SEI).

The scholar-graduates will be given the position of Special Science Teacher with salary grade level 13, as well as a teacher training program that will enable them to qualify to take the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET).

So far, 502 individuals have already qualified for the scholarship.

The Department urges Science, Math, or Engineering graduates, as well as graduates of technical-vocational courses with necessary TESDA certifications and experts in specialized learning areas to apply as part-time SHS teachers.
