In a meeting last week with Sen. Manny Pacquiao for an hour after returning to the Philippines, alleged drug lord Kerwin Espinosa who went into hiding for weeks in the Middle East, revealed to the boxing icon that former Justice Secretary, now Senator Leila de Lima, had been involved in the illegal drugs trade.
Pacquiao relayed to the media on Tuesday what Espinosa narrated to him about De Lima receiving drug money from the syndicate.
According to Pacquiao as per an ABS-CBN report, Espinosa said a caller who introduced himself as De Lima’s aide, told him his (Espinosa) help was needed for the senatorial campaign of the ex-justice chief.
Espinosa wanted to verify if De Lima herself knew about the fund-raising for her campaign expenses, Pacquiao said.
As narrated by the Sarangani solon, the younger Espinosa went to Baguio where he met De Lima.
Espinosa, Pacquiao said, had several meetings with De Lima’s aide at the Mall of Asia before he made his Baguio trip.
At the Baguio meeting, Espinosa told Pacquiao that he personally gave the dough to De Lima.
Pacquiao said Espinosa confirmed to him that it was Ronnie Dayan who fixed the Baguio meeting with De Lima.
The beleaguered lady senator had earlier admitted her romantic involvement with Dayan; her driver-bodyguard when she was justice secretary.
Espinosa didn’t know that De Lima and Dayan were romantically linked with each other, noted Pacquiao.
It was during the Baguio meeting when Dayan, according to Espinosa’s revelation to Pacquiao, told Espinosa that it was on De Lima’s order to him for them to meet in the City of Pines.
Espinosa claimed he was able to give De Lima a total of P8-million in amounts staggered monthly.
The money was for Espinosa and his family’s protection, Pacquiao quoted Espinosa as having told him.
The police had produced a photo of De Lima and the Espinosa family at the Burnham Park in Baguio City.
Meanwhile, in an interview with Senate reporters, De Lima said she expected Espinosa to tag her in his alleged drug deals as part of the Duterte administration’s plan to discredit her.
But Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, who presided over the hearing as chair of the Public Order and Illegal Drugs Committee, pointed out that it is common for politicians to have pictures with the public.
Kerwin is expected to appear at the Senate hearing Wednesday where the killing of his father, Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa, will be probed.
While De Lima said she will attend the hearing and listen intently, she said she will not question the younger Espinosa.
