- PNP chief Ronald ‘Bato’ Dela Rosa chided the Catholic Church over ‘reign of terror’ remark
- The PNP chief said that, like them, the priests are not also perfect
- He also urged the CBCP to avoid sweeping accusations against the PNP
MANILA, Philippines – Venting out his frustrations over the recent criticisms from the Catholic Church, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald ‘Bato’ Dela Rosa has asked the priests if they themselves are perfect.
Dela Rosa was responding to a pastoral letter issued by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) and read out on Sunday’s homily wherein the PNP and President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drug was described as a ‘reign of terror’.
“‘Pag sinasabi natin iyung PNP is hindi perfect, mayroong mga sindikatong pulis — bakit, masabi mo ba iyung Church, iyung mga pari mismo, they are perfect? Wala silang ginagawang kalokohan?” said a disappointed PNP chief.
[When we say that PNP is not perfect, there are rogue police officers – why, can you say that the Church, or the priests themselves, they are perfect? They have not committed abuses?]
In the pastoral letter, the CBCP cited ‘seven basic teachings’ which are rooted in the people’s “being human, being Filipino, and being Christian”.
“An additional cause of concern is the reign of terror in many places of the poor. Many are killed not because of drugs. Those who kill them are not brought to account. An even greater cause of concern is the indifference of many to this kind of wrong,” the letter read; adding that “change must be guided by truth and justice”.
But Dela Rosa said they cannot just allow the menace of illegal drugs thrive and victimize more people.
“Reign of terror? Ano gusto nila pabayaan na lang namin ang problema sa drugs? Ganun ang gusto nila?” Dela Rosa asked.
[Reign of terror? They want us to just ignore the problem of illegal drugs? Is that what they want?]
“You know, please tell them I can communicate with God without passing through them,” he said; further reminding the priests and the bishops that he is also a Catholic.
Dela Rosa likewise urged the CBCP to avoid sweeping accusations against the PNP since not all cops are rogue in as much as not all priests are perfect.
