MANILA, Philippines – A criminal complaint has been filed against President Rodrigo Duterte before the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Monday, April 24.
The case was filed by Filipino lawyer Jude Josue Sabio, the legal counsel of self-confessed Davao Death Squad (DDS) hitman Edgar Matobato who earlier linked Duterte to alleged extrajudicial killings during the latter’s term as mayor of Davao City.
In the 78-page complaint, Sabio accused Duterte of being a ‘mass murderer’. The complaint’s cover page read: “The Situation of Mass Murder in the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte: The Mass Murderer.”
“Your favorable action on this matter would not only serve the noble ends of international criminal justice but would also be the beginning of the end of this dark, obscene, murderous, and evil era in the Philippines,” said Sabio in his statement to Hon. Fatou Bensouda, Office of the Prosecuter, ICC.
According to Philstar, Sabio also sought appropriate trial for ‘crime against’ humanity against Duterte and some of his senior government officials including: Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre, Philippine National Police (PNP chief Director General Ronald Dela Rosa, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, Former Interior Secretary Ismael Sueno, Police Superintendent Edilberto Leonardo, Senior Police Officer 4 Sanson “Sonny” Buenaventura, Police Superintendent Royina Garma, National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Dante Gierran, Solicitor General Jose Calida, Sen. Richard Gordon and Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano.
The complainant has asked the international court to issue an arrest warrant against those he named in the charge sheet.
