KORONADAL CITY  – Two children were held hostage by their own father inside their own house in Purok 13, Barangay Polonoling, Tupi, South Cotabato at 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 13, 2017.

The suspect, identified as John Fritz Escalada, 44, tried to kill his own children out of depression after his wife left them, Chief Inspector Rey Egos, Tupi town police chief said.

His 10-year-old elder daughter managed to flee after receiving multiple stab wounds on her knee and arms; however, Escalada was able to grab his 6-year-old son and stab him repeatedly for six times.

The police, headed by the Provincial Director of South Cotabato Police, P/Sr. Supt. Franklin Alvero, and the town mayor, Reynaldo Tamayo, tried to calm the suspect down and asked him to let go of the younger child. However, Ezcalada refused despite several repeated appeals; prompting them to barge inside dismantling the house, Egos said.

The negotiation took four hours before the child was saved and rushed to the hospital together with his older sister who was reported to have obtained more than 10 stab wounds, as per All About the Philippines’ Facebook post.

According to the police investigators, the suspect wanted to end his and his children’s life because he can no longer support feeding and raising them after his wife, who was not identified, left them.

A metal fabricated bladed weapon, a knife, and a machete were found inside the suspect’s house, as disclosed by the NDBC News.

John Fritz Escalada was arrested and held at the Tupi Municipal Police Stationand and is now facing two counts of frustrated parricide charges.

The victims are now recovering under the care of South Cotabato Provincial Hospital in Koronadal City.
