- House Speaker called on non-Mindanaoan critics of martial law to keep quiet
- He said people of Mindanao understand need for martial law
- He also defended necessity of placing entire Mindanao under martial law
MANILA, Philippines – House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez shot back at critics of martial rule in Mindanao; saying most of those who were complaining did not live there anyway.
“Sixty days lang naman ‘yan eh! Maigsi lang ‘yong panahon na ‘yan, 60 days! Ang dami lang kyaw-kyaw kasi eh. Karamihan ng nagrereklamo ‘di naman din taga Mindanao,” GMA News quoted him as saying.
[It will only last for 60 days! That’s just a short time, 60 days! There are so many criticisms. Most of those who are complaining are not even from Mindanao.]
Alvarez said in contrast to the non-Mindanaoan grumblers, the people of the island understand why President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law for their own safety.
[You know, if you’re from there, you’ll feel that the President is really doing what’s needed, and the right thing. If you’re not from there, you’re from here or wherever, just shut up.]
The House Speaker also defended Duterte’s decision to put the whole of Mindanao under martial law; saying it was necessary in order to catch terrorists attempting to flee from Marawi.
[You know, it’s common sense that terrorism is widespread in the whole of Mindanao even though the fight is only in Marawi. And for example, would the President have again to declare martial law in another province if the terrorists go there? So it would make the President look like a fool because he has to declare martial there to catch the terrorists.]
