A teen Instagram sensation dubbed as the ‘backpack kid’ was invited by Katy Perry to show off his moves during her “Saturday Night Live” performance — and guess what; he quickly stole the show.
Russell Horning, 15, took the SNL stage during Katy’s performance of her new single ‘Swish Swish’ and performed his unique moves which he calls ‘The Russell’. He wore his trademark backpack and did his signature move of quickly swaying his hands around his waist.
The Lawrenceville, Georgia, teen tells USA Today the collaboration came about after Perry noticed him on Instagram.
“It felt really good to be up on that stage since millions of kids want to be up there but Katy Perry picked me,” Russell said.
Russell is an Instagram star with more than half a million followers; drawn in by his signature acrobatic arm swinging.
His dance videos even caught the attention of singer Rhianna who gave him a shout out last December, re-posting a video of Russell, with his hair slicked back and trousers pulled up high, dancing to a rap song, as she celebrated her Grammy win.
He told USA Today that he can’t dance but just performs his signature moves ‘for comedy, to make people laugh.’
And if you are still wondering what the teenager keeps in his mysterious big backpack, he’ll tell you.
‘I just have a full water bottle, a charger, a couple fidget spinners and earbuds to keep it a little heavy while I dance. When I’m not dancing I can listen to music, drink water, charge my phone, or fidget!’
