- Senator batting for fellow solon’s speedy confirmation as foreign affairs secretary
- He said CA can suspend its rules and waive its req’ts out of courtesy to Cayetano
- Fellow CA members confident Cayetano will be able to hurdle the commission
MANILA, Philippines – Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson is hoping for the Commission on Appointment’s speedy confirmation of Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano as Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary.
“Being the chairman of the CA Foreign Affairs Committee, I hope that we can confirm Senator Cayetano’s nomination (his is not an appointment, I was told) right after he completes the submission of the documentary requirements and the publication rule have been complied with so he can immediately assume office as DFA secretary,” the Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted him as saying.
According to Lacson, the CA may opt to suspend its rules and waive its requirements out of courtesy to one of its members.
“With the permission of the majority of the members of the CA, we can even suspend the rules and waive all the requirements out of courtesy to a sitting member of the Senate as well as the CA itself and confirm him by acclamation,” he said.
Other members also congratulated Cayetano for his appointment and believed he would easily go through the Commission’s grilling.
“Yes I think so. I am fully supportive of Alan’s capability for DFA. He will do well for the President and our people,” Sen. Ralph Recto said.
Senators Tito Sotto, Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, and Francis Escudero also wished Cayetano well and said he was a good choice to be foreign affairs secretary.
Cayetano will be replacing Perfecto Yasay whose appointment was thumbed down by the Commission following issues over his citizenship.
