A man, armed with a large knife, entered the Huay Kwang police station in Thailand – but instead of being ‘banged up’ he is met with a big hug from officer Anirut Malee.
The police officer in the CCTV footage, Anirut, provides an exceptional example of how to calm a potentially violent situation.
A 45-year-old distraught assailant with a small body-build entered the station on Saturday night. He has a knife but hero officer Anirut sits down very calmly opposite him with relaxed, slumped shoulders and very non-confrontational body language.
He quickly convinced the assailant to hand over the knife.
When he did, the policeman approached the assailant – arms outstretched and embraced the desperate man. Seconds after the hug, the cop throws away the knife and checked the man’s pockets and waist for any ‘hidden’ threats.
He continued to hug him for a few moments as other people, most probably cops, start to gather around. But Anirut signaled them all to back off a bit longer because the ‘disturbed’ man might feel threatened.
The assailant then sits quietly on the chair and appears to say thanks and sorry to the officers, as some of them comforted him and even handed him cash.

Anirut told Thai Visa News: ‘He used to be a musician but had been working as a security guard for three days and had not been paid. On top of this he had had his guitar stolen and it was all stressing him out.
‘I heard him out and sympathized and said I had a guitar to give him, and suggested we go out for a meal together. We were conversing in Southern Thai dialect’.
Anirut was praised online for a job well done.
The unnamed assailant was sent to a hospital for an evaluation of his mental state.
No charges were reported.
If you’ll inspect the video again, based on writer’s opinion, the man never pointed the knife towards any of the officers, he seemed to be pointing the knife towards his chest. Is this a suicide/self-hostage attempt? What do you think?
But whatever it is, it’s a situation that was well taken cared of; thanks to hero cop Anirut Malee.
At a time where there are so many negative stories concerning police officers around the world, it is great to see positive real-life stories like this.
When an armed person is confronted by a police officer, the normal assumption that movies suggest is the cop approaches the perpetrator with guns drawn while shouting commands to “drop” the weapon.
It usually ends with the perpetrator dropping the weapon, by force or by diplomacy, and is taken down and gets handcuffed. And of course, there are those times that the perpetrator is shot and either ends up in the hospital or morgue.
Sometimes, a little kindness is all that a troubled person needs.
