A woman from New Mexico is being evaluated at a mental hospital after police said they found her husband’s mummified body inside a bedroom closet.
Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputies were serving an eviction notice when they were met with with the sickening odor of a decaying body, officials said.
Police searched the home and found the body of the woman’s husband on a mattress in the walk-in closet of their master bedroom. He was reportedly tucked under blankets, and his head was propped up on a pillow.
Officers reported seeing baking soda and air fresheners throughout the closet.
According to a police report, neighbors noticed the man hadn’t been around. When they asked his wife about his whereabouts, she told them he was preparing for the ministry.
The woman told police her husband suffered from chronic back pain so he often slept in the closet. She also said he had been coughing up bile, but refused to go to the hospital.
She also admitted that her husband died in April 2015, but she did not know how to cope up with his death, authorities said.
She was taken to a mental health facility for evaluation and treatment.
Authorities are still trying to determine how the man died.
It’s unclear if the woman will face criminal charges.
