Colorful Congress this year: Alvarez mulls impeachment raps vs CJ Sereno, VP Leni

  • House Speaker considering impeachment raps against chief justice, vice president
  • He said he is gathering enough evidence before filing the complaint
  • He also said it was his job, added it’s nothing personal

MANILA, Philippines  –  House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez said Congress will undoubtedly “become more colorful” this year as he revealed plans to file impeachment raps against Supreme Court Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno and Vice President Leni Robredo.

According to Alvarez, he is in the process of building up evidence against the two officials — after which he’ll proceed with the filing.

“Before I file that, I need to complete all the supporting documents. Like the case with the Chief Justice, once the documents are ready, I will not hesitate to file,” he told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Alvarez also explained that it’s just the nature of his job; after being told that even President Rodrigo Duterte has held his tongue to an extent against Sereno and Robredo.

“Let’s understand the President. He cannot impeach anyone. He cannot impeach the Vice President or the Chief Justice. But we in Congress, especially the House, have the exclusive right to impeach the Vice President, the Chief Justice, the justices of the Supreme Court and officials of the constitutional bodies,” he said.

Alvarez’s office is currently in possession of two impeachment complaint filed against Robredo after she was accused of betraying the public trust after she disparaged the government’s war on drugs in a video message to the United Nations.

So far, no member of the House has come forward to endorse the complaints.

On the other hand, Sereno is accused of ordering the three Court of Appeals justice not to comply with the House’s show-cause order issued to them over their granting of the petition for habeas corpus filed by six Ilocos Norte officials currently detained in Congress.
