“We’re not meant to be in real life.”

This was singer-actress Lea Salonga’s answer when asked about her former onscreen partner Aga Muhlach’s viral letter to her.

In an article written by Bernie Franco of PEP, it was disclosed that Salonga was asked in the ABS-CBN morning show Magandang Buhay about her reaction on the letter; where Muhlach disclosed that she was “the one that got away.”

“I was in shock. Frozen in my chair! I thought it was sweet, very well written, very heartfelt,” the Broadway Diva shared.

She, on the other hand, thinks that the two of them were never meant to be.

Bad timing talaga ‘cause when we were shooting Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal, ako ‘yung may boyfriend sa totoong buhay. No’ng Sana Maulit Muli, during the first part, umiiyak-iyak because he had just broken up with a girlfriend. And then, naghiwalay muna,” she said.

[It’s really a bad timing ‘cause when we were shooting Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal, I had a boyfriend in real life. When shooting the first part of Sana Maulit Muli, he would cry every once in a while because he had just broken up with a girlfriend. And then, we went on separate ways.]

Salonga then focused in musical plays and Muhlach did another movie.

After that, they continued shooting Sana Maulit Muli.  But while Salonga was already single, Muhlach was the one who was in a relationship then.

“Nagka-girlfriend ulit, ako naman yung single. So, talagang hindi kami meant in real life,” she stated.

[He had a girlfriend again, while I was single. So we’re really not meant to be in real life.]

“We are not meant to be in real life. We are meant to be onscreen, good friends, partners,” she expressed.

Love Letter To Lea

The love letter, titled Love Letter To Lea, wherein Muhlach confessed his past feelings to Salonga — finally, after 21 years — was in her 2013 self-titled book “Lea Salonga Playlist: A Celebration of 35 years”. The letter touched a lot of hearts when it was posted online just recently.

“Lea was the one that got away. And she never knew. She never knew how she saved me. It was 1992 and I was at the very bottom of the industry. Walang-wala ako noon. Wala akong pera, wala akong career, but with Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal, I made my comeback. It was the right movie with the right girl at the right time. Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal resurrected my career,” Muhlach recalled.

He also made references to her characters in the movies Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal and Sana Maulit Muli to explain why he failed to confess his feelings for her two decades ago.

“She never knew how much I loved her. It was a lifetime ago, I was a young man on fire with passion, as all young men of a certain age are. I wooed fair ladies, and dreamed of shaping the world. And, to me, Lea was Sandy — ethereal, aloof, unattainable; my heart’s very desire. Lea was Agnes — vulnerable yet remote, kind yet callous, constantly engaged in a battle of wills. And I loved Agnes and Sandy and Lea in equal measure,” he continued.

But even if they did not end up with each other, Muhlach and Salonga still got their happy ending — as friends. Now, happy with their respective spouses, he said he is very thankful for his friendship with Salonga.
